The Lucknow Metro is a modern rapid transit system that has changed the way people travel in the capital of Uttar Pradesh. It is owned and operated by the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (UPMRC). The Metro is affordable, fast, and reliable, making it one of the most preferred transport systems in the city.

The first metro service started in Lucknow on 5 September 2015 with trial runs. Commercial services began on the Red Line (North-South Corridor) in September 2017. By March 2019, the complete Red Line route from Chaudhary Charan Singh Airport to Munshipulia was fully operational.

Lucknow Metro Red Line – North-South Corridor

The Red Line is the first operational corridor of Lucknow Metro. It runs from CCS International Airport in the south to Munshipulia in the north, covering a distance of about 23 km. This corridor is important because it passes through the busiest and most developed parts of Lucknow, including Hazratganj, Charbagh, and IT College.

Lucknow Metro Blue Line – East-West Corridor

The second line of the Lucknow Metro project is the Blue Line, also called the East-West Corridor. This line will run from Charbagh Metro Station to Vasant Kunj, covering around 11.1 km.

Unlike the Red Line, the Blue Line will mostly run underground. The plan includes 12 stations, out of which Gautam Buddha Marg, Aminabad, and Nawazganj will be key points. The project has already received approval, and the target date to complete construction is June 2027.

The construction will begin around April 2025. Trains will initially have three coaches, but they can be expanded to five in the future.

Lucknow Metro offers one of the cheapest fares in the city compared to other modes of travel.

For example, if you start from CCS Airport, you will pay ₹20 to reach Alambagh, ₹50 to reach IT College, and ₹60 to reach Munshipulia.

Expansion of Lucknow Metro

The long-term plan for the Lucknow Metro project is much bigger. UPMRC has planned six main phases and even proposed eight additional routes. Once complete, the metro will connect faraway areas like Barabanki, Mohanlalganj, SGPGI, and Rajajipuram.
