Old vs New Bangalore Airport

Earlier, the city’s air traffic was managed by HAL Airport, just 4 km from MG Road. However, with Bengaluru’s fast growth, HAL Airport became insufficient to handle the increasing number of passengers. To solve this issue, a new international airport was constructed at Devanahalli – the Kempegowda International Airport.

While HAL Airport is now used for testing and research purposes, Kempegowda International Airport (BLR Airport) serves as the main domestic and international gateway for Bengaluru.

The airport currently operates two modern terminals:

  • Terminal 1 (T1):
T1 is a four-level building that handles both domestic and international flights. It offers web check-in facilities, lounges, baggage services, duty-free shopping, and AI-enabled services. With a capacity of 11 million passengers annually, T1 can manage around 721 aircraft movements daily.

  • Terminal 2 (T2):
Inaugurated in November 2022, T2 is known as the Garden Terminal of Bangalore Airport. Spread across 255,000 sq. metres with four levels, it is India’s first greenfield airport terminal developed through a public-private partnership. The terminal has been designed with sustainable features, making it a global benchmark for eco-friendly airports.

  • Hajj Terminal:
The airport also has a dedicated terminal for Hajj pilgrims, spread over 1500 sq. metres with prayer rooms, restaurants, and waiting areas.
