Why is the Dabwali Panipat Expressway Important?

The main goal of this expressway is to reduce traffic congestion on National Highway 44 (NH-44). NH-44 is one of the busiest roads in India, especially the stretch connecting Delhi, Panipat, and Karnal. With rising traffic every year, it has become essential to build alternative routes.

The Dabwali Panipat Expressway is expected to reduce the travel time between Punjab and Haryana by almost half. It will provide faster and smoother connectivity between north-south economic corridors like Delhi-UP and Punjab-Rajasthan, improving logistics and business travel.

What’s the Current Status of the Project?

Although the project was proposed back in 2021, it hasn't started yet. The major reason behind the delay is the rejection of the initial Detailed Project Report (DPR). The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and NHAI are now preparing a revised DPR with detailed studies, surveys, and design plans.

The DPR is a crucial document as it covers route alignment, land acquisition needs, construction planning, environmental impact, and cost estimates. Once this report is approved, land acquisition will begin and the construction can officially start.

Budget and Planning

The government has already sanctioned a budget of ₹80 lakh for DPR development. Ground-level surveys, consultations with local authorities, and district-level inspections are ongoing. The focus is on using barren government-owned land wherever possible to reduce displacement and avoid affecting agricultural or residential zones.

The Dabwali Panipat Expressway is expected to bring several long-term benefits:
